in the a.m. awake before waking
thoughts stubbornly hiding
behind the ottoman, behind
a lack of drive, behind
...just behind.

no caffeine and too much booze
are conspirators throwing
litter in the way, litter
to block the wheels, litter
...litter box.

stilted mathematic functions
keeping windows closed and
prompting sleep, prompting
back to bed, prompting
...even now prompting

My mathematics teacher hated me (or rather I hated her).
It didn't help that she had the appearance of an accountant and the sensibility of an Ottoman Tyrant.
I would sit by the window and litter equations everywhere.
One Parabolic to the side of me.
Another Quadratic behind me.
"the opposite of b, plus or minus, the square root of..."
I would toss some out the window and watch those slope-intercepts shatter and split in fragments on the sunny-slope green pad beneath.

My history teacher loved me (or rather I loved her)
It didn't hurt that she had the mind of a poet and the legs of an Ottoman Princess.
No matter the topic, I had an opinion on it.
She perched behind her podium and listened while I spewed my stilted nonsense on Patrick Henry's place in the textbooks--
wheels turning, random thoughts littering the classroom.
"Give me Liberty or Give me Death!" audible through the crack in the classroom window.
